Today's modern web based applications are facing the problem of content and functionality adaptation in order to meet diverging requirements of client devices. Today, people are accessing web content and applications using not only PCs and workstations but also PDAs, smart-phones, WAP-enabled phones and even regular phones - using voice-only access.
The authors of a modern multi-modal web application or portal are striving to deal with the diversity in a cost-effective and comprehensible way. Since an appropriate apparatus and development tools are missing, the result is further promotion of the mainstream platforms at the expense of innovation and healthy competition.
During this presentation I will try to explore the problem of dealing effectively with variation points and sketch a possible solution. I will explain how the proposed approach can be applied more generally.
