- 1995 - Phone Markup Language (PML), AT&T
- 1998 - W3C hosted a conference on voice browsers:
- AT&T and Lucent were using a dialects of the original PML
- Motorola had developed VoxML
- IBM was developing SpeechML
- HP - TalkML
- PipeBeach - VoiceHTML
- ... and many other markup languages with similar features
- 1998 - VoiceXML Forum was formed by AT&T, IBM and Motorola to join
their efforts as a result of the W3C conference
- 2000 - VoiceXML 1.0
- 2003 (February) - VoiceXML 2.0 Candidate Recommendation
