VoiceXML Origins and Evolution

• 1995 - Phone Markup Language (PML), AT&T
• 1998 - W3C hosted a conference on voice browsers:
  • AT&T and Lucent were using a dialects of the original PML
  • Motorola had developed VoxML
  • IBM was developing SpeechML
  • HP - TalkML
  • PipeBeach - VoiceHTML
  • ... and many other markup languages with similar features
• 1998 - VoiceXML Forum was formed by AT&T, IBM and Motorola to join their efforts as a result of the W3C conference
• 2000 - VoiceXML 1.0
• 2003 (February) - VoiceXML 2.0 Candidate Recommendation
