The June 15 deadline for applications into our PhD student program is
approaching fast. I'm personally particularly looking for students with
an interest in measuring, understanding, modeling, and predicting the
temporal behavior of systems (on all levels, from the sequence of user
actions down to instruction execution in hardware). On the highest
(user) level, my area connects to the field of cognitive science and
pedagogy, on the software levels it relates to virtual machines,
operating systems, and compilers, while on the lowest levels it taps
into computer architecture. A common thread across all levels are
methods to trace temporal behavior, to mine the traced data, and to
build behavioral models.

BTW: I've noticed in the past that prospective students thought that the
cost of living in Switzerland was prohibitively high. In our case this
is a non-issue, since all our PhD students are fully funded.
